The Bible, Why not Reliable?
by sayitsnotso inokay here is my thread to discuss this.
i believe the bible is inspired by god and reliable.
many argue it's neither.

The people in this thread who say that one needs to demonstrate that the bible IS fiction or that the bible ISN'T the word of God have got it completely the wrong way round. Either because they know they haven't got a leg to stand on or because they're batshit crazy.
Either way, for one of them to use that kind of reasoning & then call an unbeliever ignorant is pretty laughable. I pity these poor lunatics.

1. All i can say to this is that you need to do more research on the history of the bible, you don't strike me as having done much. And really, how can you call it harmonious? It is full of contradictions & multiple themes.
2. Most of the prophecies were either self-fulfilling or were written about after the event (such as in the case of Babylon) & many of them probably never came true anyway (Jesus anyone?).
3. Which morals? Taking a child outside to be stoned for being disrespectful? Not planning ahead but merely focusing on the here & now? Not wearing mixed fabric clothes? Be specific. Many of the better morals in the bible (such as the golden rule) pre-date the bible by hundreds to thousands of years.
4. I'm beginning to think that this thread is satire. Is it? If it is then you should have made that more clear. And really, go & get a decent science book, read it from start to finish, then re-read the biblical sections relating to science & then get back to me. Much of the bible is scientifically inaccurate (bats are fowl?, birds appeared at the same time as fish?, the earth was created before the sun?, the earth hangs on nothing AND has pillars, corners & the heavens have windows?) & as for the parts that are accurate, most of those things were already known by the ancient egyptians 2000 years before the earliest parts of the bible were written. People were not as ignorant back in those days as you might think.
5. How do you know they were being honest? Since much of what they wrote isn't consistent with history, it seems that calling them honest is an odd thing to do, they were either dishonest or misinformed. And if you're referring to people like Moses being honest about his own failures... hmm, check out the REAL history of the Torah, it wasn't written by Moses. In fact, Moses may not have even existed.

I continue to find it incredible....
by AK - Jeff inthat christians throw the old 'where did the matter come from if there was a big bang'?, while having no problem with thinking that god was always there!.
so the dust in the room had to have a 'maker'?
but the super-computer brain sky-daddy is just there and always has been?.

That's a strawman. Most believe every created thing had to have a Creator.
Well duh, that's a tautology. And who's to say that the universe was a created thing? We don't know that the big bang was the beginning. And a 'creator' doesn't have to be intelligent, so it needn't be GOD.
A better way of stating it would be: Everything with a cause had to have a first cause.
Which simply is not known to be true, so strawman or not, it's still an incorrect statement. A better way of stating it would be: Everything with a cause may have had a first cause (just don't tell William Lane Craig that it only MAY have had a cause, he'll be upset).

What to write in my niece's (JW) wedding card
by voodoo lady inmy very militant jw niece is marrying a jw boy who i know little about, though i presume he must have priveleges or be a pioneer for her to have dated him in the first place.
though i feel so sad at the reality she's about to face - marrying a man she barely knows who she's probably never spent time alone with - i would still like to celebrate her love, or at least these exciting new feelings that she's experiencing that she believes to be love.
(and for all i know may certainly be love).. .

" {1 corinthians 1:10 niv}.
if a "true religion" exists, then it would probably have to be one or a few faith groups within one of the 10,000 religions.

It's which ever one they're arguing in favour of at any given time. They're not too bright, but they are at least bright enough to know not to argue in favour of both simaltaneously.
